Dentals Crowns Q & A

What are Dental crowns?

One of the primary purposes of a dental crown is to enhance the appearance of a tooth. Dental veneers can sometimes be an option in a situation such as this, but because dental veneers only cover the front portion of the tooth, they’re unable to provide the strengthening that a dental crown delivers. Because a dental crown completely covers the damaged tooth above the gum line, they are often considered the highest quality tooth restoration.

Four Types of Dental Crowns to Choose From

In general, the Burlington Center Dental Associates can use one of four materials when placing a dental crown on a tooth. The four materials are ceramic, porcelain, gold alloys, and metal. The type of material that will be used will be based on several factors including your personal preference, and the location of the tooth that needs treatment. We’ll discuss all options with you prior to your dental crown treatment so you can make the most informed decision for your lifestyle and your budget before any dental work begins.

The Dental Crown Procedure

The dental crown procedure is broken out into four steps.

  • The examination and consultation to determine which type of crown will be best suited to your needs.
  • An impression of your mouth will be made and sent to a lab – although the cap/crown can sometimes be made in-house – and a temporary crown/cap will be placed on the affected tooth.
  • When the permanent crown/cap is ready to be placed, it will be checked for a precise fit and then bonded in place on the affected tooth.
  • Afterward, you will have a very natural-looking tooth that can be treated just as you would treat your other teeth when it comes to brushing and flossing – no special care required!
