Periodontal Disease Q & A

What is Periodontal Disease?

The word periodontal literally means “around the tooth”. Periodontal disease is a condition which affects the gums and other surrounding, supporting tissues in the mouth that ensure our teeth are secure and healthy. Periodontal disease is an inflammatory condition that is often caused by poor oral hygiene and a lack of proper dental care. Gingivitis is the first stage of periodontal disease, and it is the only reversible stage of the condition. Once the periodontal disease has advanced past gingivitis, patients are stuck managing symptoms for the rest of their lives.

As the disease progresses, irreversible damage is caused to the gums, supporting tissues and even jaw bone. Loose teeth, tooth shifting/misalignment, and even tooth loss are common as the condition continues to progress.

What are Periodontal Disease Treatments?

At the Burlington Center Dental Associates, we are proud to offer various periodontal treatment options that can address your condition and the associated symptoms. These include:

  • Scaling and root planing may be recommended to reduce bacteria and tartar that has built up in the mouth, resulting in periodontal disease. Scaling and root planing allows the gums to re-attach to the teeth and heal properly.
  • Tissue regeneration is recommended when periodontal disease has resulted in the gum, bone and other supporting tissues to be destroyed. With bone and gum grafting, regrowth can be encouraged, improving the function and health of the patient’s smile.
  • Pocket reduction surgery is required when periodontal disease has caused pockets to form around the teeth, allowing bacteria to thrive.
  • Dental implants may be recommended if periodontal disease has resulted in missing teeth or teeth that need to be extracted.
